I have been brought up in a household where my mum used to attend to us most of the time. I was really close to dad but I don’t remember my dad or any dads I knew doing any ‘chores’ related to their kids/babies. If they did, it was like an obligation… A dad always ‘babysits’ his child when the mother isn’t around. That was then.

How did you react to the news that you are expecting?

The news brought with it a lot of excitement, for my husband and for me. But, given that I was in a somewhat “complex” juxtaposition (my husband was married once before), I was very apprehensive about how my baby would be “accepted”. Society didn’t let me down either – I was stared at and sniggered at by the “correct” types, who had led life by the book. It gets difficult for parents to continuously hold on to their child and sit, feeding themselves and the child at the dinner table. While it is better than running around him trying to make her eat one morsel, it can also get impractical.
